Ring of Bjólfur "Beowulf"

Ring of Bjólfur is an observation deck based on the magnificent mountain Bjólfur, 1085 m high. Named after Bjólfi (Beowulf), a settler who first settled in Seyðisfjörður. The mountain is said to have housed a temple in ancient times. Vikings were buried with their most precious belongings, jewelry and weapons. It is believed that Bjólfur was buried high up in the mountain, therefore the ring-shaped structure symbolises a precious silver ring belonging to Bjólfur

Ring of Bjólfur was the winning proposal in a prequalified competition issued by the municipality in 2021. The platform was designed from the start in collaboration between architects, constructing architects, landscape architects and engineers. The historical ring structure will float over the cliffs, providing an indescribable connection with nature and ancent times.

The ring has a diameter of 32 meters giving the 360°experience views of the:

"The Eggs"

New walking trail to the Eggs

The Eggs of Merry Bay are an art piece by the respected Icelandic artist Sigurður Guðmundsson. The piece represents 34 eggs from species of birds that nest within the Djúpivogur area. The Eggs are positioned on top of concrete pillars that were used by the fishmeal factory Bræðslan. The old fish-factory then left the town in 2006 and left the town with and empty building and concrete pillars that had no use anymore. The District Manager of Djúpivogur had been pondering on what could be done with these old pillars, so he consulted the visual artist Sigurður Guðmundsson. Sigurður immediately came up with the idea of the granite eggs and put his idea into action.

Currently under construction is a sidewalk next to the eggs, benches and ideal photo spots, making the magnificent art more approachable to be enjoyed

"Stream" Downtown Egilsstaðir

Egilsstaðir is often referred to as the service center of the east. Altho Egilsstaðir only has a port related to the air, as in an international airport. In the nearest future we are hoping to have weekly flights back and forth to Europe but as it is, the direct flights are occasionally. Egilsstaðir connects the other towns.

“Stream” is the new downtown layout for Egilsstaðir. We are looking at a massive upgrate on all infastructure, housing, diverse services and style on a large area. The construction has already started in some areas but this is a very large project spanning over many years. – As we say in Iceland, it’s not a sprint, it’s a long run and we are ready to run for quite some time for the spectacular outcome.

Harbour area at Djúpavogur

Over the years attendance at the port area has increased significantly in Djúpivogur. From beeing a small local marina, only to service the local fishing and aquaculture, to greet large cruse ships with up to 3ooo passangers.

During the summer 2023 an extensive construction work at the port began. Involving pavement work to to increase the accessibility for vehicles. The area was in need of new solutions for road safety and croud management. We are happy to say that we aim is to complete construction by next summer along with a new walking path towards the most visited place in Djúpivogur, the Eggs in Mary bay.

Port expansion in Seyðisfjörður

Múlaþing, in collaboration with Vegagerðin, plans to expand Seyðisfjarðarhöfn.  Conditions in the marina will be greatly improved and the port’s ability to receive a wider variety of ships will increase.
The project includes a new 280 m steel bulkhead berth and will house the marina within it.

Seyðisfjörður port is alredy in developement and hopefully construction will start in 2024, next year and the area will be ready within five years. The depth will be 10 meters. The total material requirement of the project is about 149,000 m3 and the construction area is about 3 ha.

Archaeological exhibition area

Construction of huge avalanche defense parks began in 2020, where the deadliest avalanche in Iceland occurred in 1894. Around this construction, the search for antiquities began, which led to one of the most significant archaeological excavations in Iceland’s history.

Houses, objects, body remains, jewelry, weapons and various other things have been found and believed to be from the years 940-1100. Stories and knowledge lie in these relics of the first inhabitants of Seyðisfjörður emerging from the earth in form of tangible material relics. Kumlin can be connected to the oldest settlement in the fjord, but rich equipment was buried with the dead so that it is possible to find out how these people dressed and looked and thus gives us an idea of their life before us.

In the near future the area is to be opened to visitors. Organized tours and footpaths will hopefully be accessible in 2025.

Egilsstaðir Airport

Egilsstaðir Airport operates scheduled flights between Egilsstaðir and Reykjavík. It is also one of the four international airports in Iceland and plays an important role as an alternate airport for flights between Europe and Iceland, the United States and Iceland, and flights over Iceland. Several direct flights between Egilsstadir and various cities in Europe have been available in recent years.

The terminal was originally built between 1963 and 1968, but rebuilt and expanded between 1987 and 1999. Future plans for the airport include expansions in various areas, the next phase includes a wider area for more aircraft.
